Why Install a Water Filter when Tap Water in Singapore is Safe to Drink?

Complete Eradication of Once Off Incidents that Contaminate Water

Water coming out of any tap in Singapore is guaranteed SAFE to drink directly. This is because the Singapore government believes in providing the highest quality of water to the people. According to the Public Utilities Board (PUB), water in Singapore water is among the few countries which fall within or exceed both the World Health Organization’s (WHO) drinking water guidelines and the US Environmental Public Health (Quality of Piped Drinking Water)’s Regulations.

However, since HDB and private apartments water tanks are maintained by town councils and individual building owners respectively, water contamination from these parts of the distribution network cannot be avoided. To tackle such an issue, it is mandated by PUB for these groups of people to engage licensed water service plumbers to inspect these tanks.

Unfortunately, this is not failproof, and there were times where things have gone awry, on more than one occasion.

More notable cases include incidents where contaminants such as worms and yellowish water were found in the HDB water tanks. In 2011, it was reported that a female corpse was found abandoned in a rooftop water tank in Woodlands. Investigations found that bloodstains were present in the 2-metre deep tank, with 168 households had their drinking water tainted by this event.

In 2014, a Katong resident was just one of many residents and businesses in Eastern Singapore who witnessed brown, muddy water flowing out of their taps. It was later discovered that a leaking water pipe was the cause of this disaster. To rectify, PUB had to repair the leak on an 800mm diameter water pipe along Still Road.

In 2018, rusty brown water was seen flowing from a tap in an Ang Mo Kio HDB flat. PUB releases a statement that the water discolouration was due to the resuspension of mineral sediments in the pipe.

Besides these unfortunate incidents, water in Singapore may still contain traces of contaminants due to corroded piping, poor maintenance of piping system etc, so if 100% clean water is wanted, installing water filters are recommended.

Removal of Chorine & Contaminants

Chlorination or in layman terms, the addition of chlorine to water for disinfection purposes is widely adopted in Singapore. This process is used to kill bacteria in drinking water. However, chlorine is harmful in high doses, but fret not because chlorine used by Singapore is well within WHO standards - a chlorine level that can kill any bacteria and virus while staying safe for human use. However, despite this some people still prefer removing as much chlorine and any traces of contaminants as possible.

Water Enhancement

After the removal of all contaminants in the water, addition of good minerals to the water is then possible. At Blueheale, water Enhancement is a different from typical systems in the market. FDA approved and SGS tested natural minerals to enhance the water into Hydrogen Water is utilised. This increases the PH of drinking water to make healthier and better water for everyday use.

Conclusion: Is Water Filter Necessary?

In conclusion, having a simple and affordable water filtration is definitely recommended, if cost is not a concern. However, in comparison to other countries where clean water is not readily available, then a water filter is compulsory.
